Artists information

Franziska Furter’s works are always a game of illusion – patterns seem at first familiar to us, then playfully turn our visual expectations on their heads. In the «substrat.01 – oberfläche.struktur» exhibition, Furter has presented a cross-section of her works. Delicate graphite drawings have the appearance of classic silhouettes, photographs disorientate with their double reflections, and space installations play with the visual expectations of spectators. By adorning walls, ceilings and floors, Furter draws the eye to the immediate materiality of the space. Using pencil drawings, plastic film and transparent adhesive materials, she challenges spectators to redirect their gaze to the underlying structures of a space.

Franziska Furter, born in 1972 in Zurich, attended the Schule für Gestaltung in Zurich and the professional course in conceptual spatial design at the Basel Schule für Gestaltung. She lives and works in Basel and Berlin.

substrat.01 – oberfläche.struktur

In 2001, the substrat exhibition series in Berlin put on display for the first time a number of current viewpoints in contemporary art. oberfläche.struktur brought together and juxtaposed five separate artistic approaches - Florian Bach's installation work, Franziska Furter's drawings, Nicole Hassler's painting, Valentin Hitz's film/installation work, and Jean-Thomas Vannotti's painting. All the artists are Swiss and spent time in Berlin as scholarship holders on a 3 to 12-month studio residency. In the «substrat.01 - oberfläche.struktur» exhibition, they have displayed new works created during this period.

The exhibition was supported by the Swiss Embassy in Berlin, the Fonds Cantonal de Décoration et d'Art Visuel Genève, the Département de l'Instruction Publique et des Affaires Culturelles Neuchâtel, the Zug Kulturstiftung Landis & Gyr, and the Verband Schweizer Weinexporteure SWEA.

Franziska Furter showed a cross-section of her works, presenting the two larger works «Moon around» and «Seeland». Like optical illusions, the photographs in the «Seeland» series play with visual expectations and confuse the senses. The piece «Moon around», a work made from silver foil that coalesces into the concrete floor of the exhibition hall, takes its title, which means 'saunter about aimlessly', literally. The delicate silvery meanders that wander through the exhibition space invite the spectator to follow them, and thus to tread very specific paths. A second level of perception emerges from taking the title of the piece literally, with its allusion to the moon and its sometimes silvery shadows.
